About Kefir

What is Milk Kefir?

Milk kefir is a fermented drink that uses grains to inoculate milk creating a creamy probiotic rich beverage which some liken to a pourable yoghurt.  It is thought to originate from the Northern Caucasus region in Russia where it is still widely consumed and has been attributed to a longer lifespan for the people who consume it.

The grains resemble cauliflower florets and are made up of up to 60 different strains of beneficial yeasts and bacteria. Most yoghurts only have 2 or 3 so the diversity of drinking kefir in comparison is huge. Traditionally fermenting with the grains creates a far superior product compared to most store bought kefir products that use a starter culture.
